Extra Y2K Precaution: Machine Shut-Downs

The Computing Center staff is confident that it has addressed local Year 2000 issues in a timely and thorough fashion, and that its systems are Year 2000 ready. However, other non-UO systems on the Internet may or may not handle the Year 2000 transition smoothly, and it is impossible to predict the behavior or "side effects" that might arise from malfunctions of these other systems during the transitional period.

Therefore, the Computing Center plans to shut down its machines for an extended period starting at 5:00 p.m. on December 31st and ending at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 1st. The machines affected by this shutdown are:

Darkwing

Gladstone

Oregon/Daisy/Donald

Alpha Unix cluster (river, geyser, downpour, thunderstorm, etc.)

search.uoregon.edu (the campus Altavista search engine)

Since this shutdown occurs during official UO holidays (December 31st and January 1st) when the institution is closed, the Computing Center feels this precaution will not cause a major disruption of normal University operations.

Email messages, which are sent to Darkwing, Gladstone, or Oregon/Donald/Daisy during the shutdown window, will be queued for delivery once the systems come back up at noon on January 1st.

UONet (the campus network) and our wide area connectivity will stay up, including all network routers, switches and hubs.

If you have any questions about this announcement, please contact the UO Systems staff at 346-1730.
